Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors: Increase in Complaints and Disciplinary Action Against Licensed Professional Counselors

 Image1

Complaints against licensed professional counselors (LPC) are rising and so too are disciplinary/enforcement action taken against them.  The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors (TSBEPC) is the regulatory entity responsible for regulating licensed professional counselors in the State of Texas.

As of fiscal year 2009 (period runs Sept. 1 of the beginning year through Aug.31 of the following year), there were 16,600 licensed professional counselors (LPCs) in the State of Texas.  In the last twelve years, the number of complaints filed against LPCs has dramatically increased, rising each year (with the exception of 2001) and nearly doubling since 1997.  During this same period, disciplinary action taken against LPCs has reached never before seen numbers.

As evidence by the chart below regarding disciplinary action taken by the LPC Board, it is critical that LPCs who are the subject of a complaint and Board investigation consult experienced counsel to help them navigate through the Board's administrative disciplinary process as it is unlike and different from most other regulatory agencies' disciplinary scheme.

Here are the statistics from the Board:
